The top ten worst film of 2013

With this year having great films coming out, there were also some films that came out that shouldn’t have even been made in the first place or looked so interesting in the trailers but wasn’t all that it seems. These are  the top ten worst films of 2013 that I think that no one should ever watch.

10.Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

This is a sequel to the first one where Percy and his friends go on a journey to find the Golden Fleece to save their camp. I really liked the first film even though it got a bad review from the critics. It was perfect, it had the director of the first harry potter film, it had great actors and it had a great plot. I was a bit disappointed when I saw this one. I get that they didn’t want to change the storyline that much because fans didn’t like the first one but i think that they should have because it would make it more interesting. I didn’t like the fact that Annabeth’s hair was now blonde even though she is blonde in the books because it didn’t suit the actress playing the character at all. I just hope that if they do make a third one, they would try to make it a bit better and bring Christopher Columbus back. I have given this film a 6/10.

9. Red Dawn

This is a film about the US being invaded and a group of teenagers decide to fight back. This film had a limited release in the UK so I was lucky enough to see it. I’ve never seen the original film so I can’t compare it. I thought that the film was good but there were some parts that I drifted off while watching it. I loved the action it it though and they had good actors. I think that they could have still improved it because they filmed it two years ago. I have given this film a 6/10

8. Delivery Man

This film is about a guy who finds out that there was a mix up in the sperm donation and that he has fathered 533 children and that they all want to meet him. This film was boring because it was just Vince Vaughan acting as himself in this film. I didn’t even laugh at all and when there were parts that were supposed to be sentimental, I didn’t actually know because the film had this dull mode to it throughout. I have given this film a 5/10.

7. The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones

This film is about a girl called Clary Fray who discovers that she is a shadow hunter and after her mother disappears, she has to team up with a group of shadow hunters to find her. This film was good but it had a too much happening. I think that the author was trying to make it like the next twilight but better and it didn’t work. Lilly Collins and Jamie were good but the film lacked something. There were also a few surprises that I didn’t expect and thought they were unnecessary. I’m still not sure if I would watch the second film when it comes out though. I have given this film 5/10

6. Beautiful Creatures

This film is about a boy called Ethan who lives in the south and dreams of going away. He meets this new girl Lena who has a secret. When I heard about this film, I started reading the book but I got so bored that I couldn’t finish it after three chapters so I thought that I would just wait until the film came out and when I watched it, I was so bored. Some parts were a bit interesting but then it started to remind me of twilight which was one of the worst teenage franchise ever made. I even think that twilight fans might not even like it. The only good thing about this film was that they had a list stars like Emma Thompson. I have given a rating of what I think the standards of this film is pout of ten which is 5/10

5. The Lone Ranger

This is an adventure film where a famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. I had mixed feeling about this film when I heard about it and bad review critics were given it. In the end, I did go to see it and it was a bit better than I thought it was going to be but still boring. The storyline sometimes dragged on for a bit too long. I don’t know why people don’t like Disney films age 12. Maybe they think that there films should only be aimed to kids. I feel bad for Armie Hammer though because every film that he has been in has been bad apart from the Social Network. The most annoying parts of this film were Johnny Depp’s character, the flashbacks to the 1930s during a really good action scene and the fact that the villain was only there for two minutes of the film. I also thought that this film was all about the sidekick rather than the actual Lone Ranger. I have given this film a 4/10

4. Parkland

This film is based on the assassination of JF Kennedy and how the doctors of Parkland hospital tried to keep him alive while other things were happening. This film also had a limited release in the UK which I now know why they did that. This film dragged on for so long. I thought it was interesting for fifteen minutes but after a while, I just wanted this film to be over because because it was that boring. I have given this film a 3/10

3. Admission

This is a film about a school admissions officer who meets up with her former classmate who thinks that one of his students might be her son she gave up for adoption years ago. This film also had a limited release in the UK and main reason is because it says that it was a comedy film when it wasn’t. The film felt like it was trying so hard to be funny at times but it wasn’t working. I didn’t even follow the whole story because of how boring it was. I have given this film a 2/10.

1. This is the End and Quartet

This is about six famous friends trapped in a house after an apocalypse. For my birthday, there were two films that I wanted to watch, this one and World War Z. We ended up seeing this film because it was the next film that was showing and because it had more great reviews than the other film but after watching it, I thought that I should have just waited for the World War Z screening. This is the worst comedy film that I have ever seen. The only good parts lasted for three minutes and the rest was so bad. I just wanted to come out of the cinema and never see this film again. This is the reason why I don’t watch any of Seth Rogen’s films. I have given this film a 1/10

This film is about retired opera singers who live in a residents home. I got to see a preview of this film with my cousins and felt so odd. It was full of old couples and I felt out of place. The jokes weren’t even funny. I have given this film a 1/10 and have named this one and This Is The End the worst film of 2013

The top ten films of 2013

This year alone, I have seen 35 films which have been released which isn’t a lot and don’t include horror films. Out of this, I have narrowed it down to the top ten films which I think are the best in this year

10. The heat
This is a buddy comedy film that stars Sandra bullock and Melissa McCarthy who work together to solve a drug case. I liked that this had Melissa in it because for the last year, she has been the breakout star. Her comedy films are always the best and I laughed so much watching this one. I also loved the fact that Sandra bullock went back to her miss congeniality ways and did a cop film. I have rated this film out of 10 and given it a 6/10

9. Now you see me
This film is about four magicians who rob a bank and police try to catch them. It is a bit like cat and mouse. This film was hated by most critics but I found it incredible. I liked how they always kept you in suspense that you didn’t know what was coming next. You also go to see how magic is performed on stage. There were some funny scenes. The ending was also unexpected. I have given this film a 6/10

8. Olympus has fallen

This film is about the white house being captured by a terrorist mastermind and the president is kidnapped. It is up to a formal presidential guard to rescue him. Before I saw this film in the cinema, I didn’t know a lot about it and I thought that it wouldn’t be great but I was so wrong. This film was one of the best action films that I have seen in a long time. The film did have some scenes that were unecessery I was intrigued at what was going to happen next. I have given this film a 6/10.

7. Warm Bodies

This film is about a zombie called R who befriends a human called Julie. What I liked about this film that it wasn’t like any of those teen drama films that came out and had a girl who had two guys who liked her. This film was a bit like Romeo and Juliet because they were both from two different worlds. This film has a combination of romance, comedy, drama and horror so it is a good film if you like any of these genres. I also liked that this film wasn’t like your typical zombie film. I have given this film a 7/10

6. The Bling Ring

This is a film based on a true story about a group of teenagers who were obsessed with fame and stole from celebrities. When I heard this story, I was fascinated about how these teens wanted fame and what they would do to get it. This film taught us about who your true friends are. It also made you feel sorry for the teens because they wanted to stand out and have a different life because they were fed up of theirs. Emma Watson has shown that she has grown since the Harry Potter films. I think that the new actors should all get recognition because they were amazing. I would be looking forward to their future projects. This film for me has been given a 7/10

5. Wreck-It Ralph

This film is about a video game character who is tired of being the bad guy of his game so he sets out on a journey to prove that he is a hero. Some people might argue that this film came out last year but after doing some research, I found out that the film came out in February of this year in the UK.  This film is the only animation film that I have added to this list mainly because I felt that the best year for animation films was 2010 when Toy Story 3 and Despicable Me came out. This film reminded me of all the best animations film that are out there that I thought that it was made by Pixar because it was that good. It had an amazing storyline and you never lost track of the main character’s aim.  I have given this film a 7/10.

4.Star Trek Into Darkness

This is a sequel to the first film that came out in 2009 when the crew have to defeat a new villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch. I have always wanted them to make a sequel to the Star Trek film so when they announced that it was coming I was so excited. This film was incredible and I was fascinated every time. I loved the fact that it was set in London and that they had a British actor in the film. They picked the best person to play the villain. This film was full of action and had some comedy elements here and there. I have given this film a 7/10

3. The Way Way Back

This film is about a boy who goes on summer vacation with his mum, her boyfriend and his daughter. He becomes friends with the manager of the water park and has a summer that he will never forget.  This is a coming of age film that came out at the right time because I started to get a bit sick of the superhero films that came out this year. This film had its funny moments while talking about real issues. The only bad thing was the ending otherwise everything was great.I have given this film an 8/10.

2. Saving Mr Banks

This film is about how Walt Disney tried to get P L Travers to give him the rights to turn Mary Poppins into a film. I have already rated this film and there is nothing more to say about it other than you will laugh, cry and sing along.

1. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

This is the sequel to the first film that came out in 2012 when the rebellion has just started. I liked the fact that every important that was in the book was in the film so it wasn’t that important if there were some bits missing . This film was more epic that the first and darker because they are adults now. My favourite quote from this film is ‘Remember who the real enemy is’ because it has such an important meaning to the entire film. People say that it was much better than the first film but for me, there wasn’t that much difference. They were both incredible. I liked that we got to see more of Gale in this film film because in the first, he was only there for 5 minutes. I am looking forward for the third one when it comes out in the new year in November. I have given this film a 9/10 and have made it my favourite film of 2013.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

The first time I heard about this film was on YouTube. The trailer for this film made me discover my favourite band, the lumineers. I was lucky enough to see a preview screening of this film.

This story is about a guy called Pat has lost his wife and job. He now lives with his parents after just come out of a mental institution. He tries to rebuild his life and get his wife back. On the way he meets a girl called Tiffany who has lost her husband and has got fired from her job. Tiffany offers to help him get his wife if he does an unexpected favour for her.

What I liked most about this film was that it was a light comedy film that dealt with real issues based on mental health. Bradley Cooper was amazing as the main character. You were rooting for him in the entire film for him to get his life together and start anew one. There were no bad character in the film, everyone was exceptionally good.

The standout performance for me was Jennifer Lawrence as Tiffany. I loved how she brought sassy  to the character. As soon as I saw her performance in this film, I knew that she deserved an Oscar for this role. You completely forgot that she was in the hunger games which is something that most actors can’t do.

What was good about this film was that I went to see it when 30 minutes had gone past and still understood everything that was happening which is not something that you usually get in film today. I have given this film a 9/10

Lincoln (2012)

I watched this film it came out on DVD. The main reason why I wanted to watch this film because of Daniel Day Lewis and it is a Steven Spielberg film.

This film is based in the 16th century and is about the civil war and how President Lincoln fought to end the war and slavery.

What I liked about this film was Daniel Day Lewis’s performance. I have seen a lot of people play Lincoln but his one is by far the best that I have ever seen. I liked the fact that he always stayed in character even if they weren’t filming because it shows how serious of an actor he is. It was good that the film was about something other than Lincoln’s assassination.

While watching the film, I did get bored. Mainly because I didn’t know the story before. For this film I have given it a 5/10

The Grinch (2001)

Since it is getting towards Christmas, I thought it would be good to rate a Christmas film. The first time I saw this one was a few days before Christmas when they showed it on tv.

[ GRINCH POSTER ]

This film is about the Grinch who hates Christmas and everything about it. He also hates the people of whoville and how they celebrate and enjoy it. On Christmas Eve, he decides to steal Christmas from the whos in the best possible way he can.

What I liked most about this film was Jim Carrey’s acting. He potrayed the character in a way that nobody can that at times you felt scared, angry and sad for the character. The makeup that they did for the Grinch was so incredible and looks so real. I liked the fact that it wasn’t all happy, jolly like most Christmas films.

I have to admit that when in first watched this film, I was kind of scared of the grinch but over the years this film has grown on me. This is my ultamite favourite Christmas film. I have rated this film 10/10

School Of Rock (2003)

The first time I watched this film was in the cinema. I didn’t know the people from the film and the previous movies that they have done.

[ SCHOOL OF ROCK POSTER ]

This film is about a guy called Dewey who got kicked out of his hand and is desperate for work so he impersonates a school teacher and turns the class into a rock ‘n’ roll band who compete at the battle of the bands.

What I liked most about this film was that they created new songs that still after 10 years, I remember. Jack Black was also funny which made the film more entertaining. The standout character in the film for me was Miranda Cosgrove as Summer. Her character was so bossy and a know it all which made me like her even more. It was really good that she was in this film because after watching it, I got to see her in other things like Drake & Josh, iCarly and Despicable Me.

This film has to be one of my favourites that I never get bored of. For this film, I have given it a 9/10 because it is that awesome.

Saving Mr Banks (2013)

For this film, I was lucky enough to see the preview screening of it. This was a film that I was excited to see because it was a Disney film.

[ SAVING MR. BANKS POSTER ]

This film is about the few weeks that it took for Walt Disney to get P.L. Travers to give him the rights to the book Mary Poppins to make in to a film. This is something that Walt Disney has been fighting for 20 years after his daughter read the book and enjoyed it. You also got to see the back story on what was the inspiration for the book.

What I liked about this film was that you got the back story of the inspiration of Mary Poppins and why Mary Poppins came in the first place. You also got to know some things about the author that most people don’t know. Some people might think that the film was all about Walt Disney but he is hardly seen in the film which was good in a way because you weren’t taken out of the story of Mary Poppin’s creator. Emma Thompson portrayed the author in such an exceptional way. You got to see how mean the character was mainly because she didn’t want to sell her creation to someone who made cartoons. Tom Hanks was also great as Walt Disney. It was good that they made an icon play an icon.

The stand out moment for me in the film was the Sherman Brothers and how they created the song and filled the movie and the work environment with joy. After seeing this film, I came out of the cinema humming the tunes. This will be a film that I would buy on DVD and rewatch. For this film, I have given it a 8/10 and recommend this film to anyone old or young.

Bridge To Terabithia (2007)

The first time I heard about this film was when I saw a trailer on TV and posters on bus stops on the way to school. As soon as I heard about it, I wanted to watch but I didn’t get to see the film until a few weeks after it came out.

[ BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA POSTER ]

P.S. may contain spoilers. This film is about a boy called Jess who is an outsider in his school and his family by being the only boy. He meets a girl called Leslie who is new to the school and beats him in a school race meant for boys. The two become friends knowing that they live opposite each other and learn that there is a magical kingdom near them called teribithia.

This is my favourite film of all time and completely different from what I expected it to be which was children trying to save a fantasy land from an evil villain like Narnia but it is more than that. It is a film that teaches children that they can have a vivid imagination. It also teaches us about friendship. This is the first film that I have seen these actors in and I have to say that they are incredible. I also found out that this is based on book that the author wrote for her son which is a wonderful story. As this film can make you laugh, it can also make you cry. This film is both for old and young. I have given this film 10/10 because it is that incredible and you never get bored of watching it.

Hunger games (2012)

The first time I found out about the hunger games was from the VMAs in 2011. They showed trailers of upcoming films in the next year and all I saw was a girl in the woods and she shot an arrow. This made me want to know more about the film. I read a preview of the book a month before the movie came out but didn’t get the book until a day before it came out in the cinema. Unfortunately, I didn’t finish reading the book before I saw it so I wasn’t one of those big fans.

Hunger Games

The film’s story is based on North America in the future where it is split into 12  districts and the capital which is the rich area. From the twelve districts, one boy and one girl is picked at the reaping to compete in the hunger games where they fight to the death until they have one victor. This year Katniss

iss (the main protagonist) sister Prim gets picked in the reaping that she later volunteers to take her place and together with Peeta (the boy that is also picked from her district which is district 12) they have to fight for survival in the games.

What I liked about this franchise as a whole was that we had a female lead that could fight for herself which we don’t get in films. The film as a whole was incredible. I liked the fact that they did use the shaky camera work because even though it was annoying at times, it reminded me of the indie films that were so rare and showed you that it was all about the storyline rather than glitz and glamour which we see in most films today. It also gave you a sense of how Katniss lifestyle is in the film.

This was the second film that I had seen Jennifer Lawrence in with the first being X Men:First Class. In that film, I didn’t get to see her performance that much so it was good to know she was in this one. The way that she brought Katniss on the screen was incredible. It was like acting came natural to her that for the whole film, you believed her and how she reacted to the situation that she was in. Josh Hutcherson was also amazing as Peeta but my favourite stand out performance has to be Woody Harrelson as Haymitch. His character was so funny. This film is also still incredible after a year it has come out and still jaw-drooping even though some people will still know what is going to happen. I have rated this film out of ten to how I think it was and have given it a 9/10.
