Mean Girls (2004)

The first time that I heard about this film was when the trailers came out but I never went to see it in the cinema because I was too young and never knew that you could go and see a 12 film with a parent even if you were young until I saw Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire.

Before this film came out, people considered clueless as the best ‘chick flick’ but after watching this film, I have to say that this is the best teen film that is out there.

This film is about a girl who moves from Africa to a new school where everyone is split up into groups and she and her friends work together to try and sabotage the Plastics (popular girls). This film is basically about high school and status.

The first time that I watched this film was when I was 12 and now on their 10th anniversary, I still think that this film is amazing. This film is one of those films that you will watch with friends as it is the greatest teen film. As well as the film being a great chick flick, it is also a great comedy film that has so many quotes that people use to this day like ‘You go Glen Coco’ and ‘On Wednesdays, we wear pink’. People always say that fetch is never going to happen but after the success of this film, I have to say that fetch has been happening for 10 years and go on for longer than that.

This film has created an excellent career path for people like Lindsay Lohan, Rachel Adams and Amanda Seyfried. This film has also given a pathway to other films out there like easy A showing that teen films don’t always have to be cheesy and can be really iconic and watched by anyone. I also think that teen films made by comedians like Tina Fey are so amazing like pitch perfect which was written by Elizabeth banks because they always show the real essences of teens everywhere. I have rated this film and given it a 9/10 because it is a film that you won’t get bored of watching

The Amazing Spider-man 2 (2014)

I have always been a big fan of Spider-man since I saw the first film in 2002 and even though I didn’t like the first remake of the new Spider-man films, I was still going to watch Amazing Spider-man 2 as the trailers have made this film look epic.

May contain spoilers. This second instalment shows Spider-Man fighting against greater enemies like Electro while still trying to figure out why his parent’s left and the company that they worked for.

This film was better than the first. It had everything that you wanted, action and comedy which wasn’t good in the first film. What I liked about this film was that you got to understand the story much more than the first one. It’s so great that they kept it true to the comics as it had a better story that the original spider man film.

Before I saw the film, I thought that it would be confusing as they had 3 villains but it worked really well which tells us that the sinister six would be able to be part of this franchise. Even though the villains were ok in the movie, sometimes you did sought of forget the storyline as Peter was still looking for an answer about his parents so it felt like it was a bit like Spider-Man 3. Electro started as a strong character in the beginning but later in the film, I started to forget that he even was a villain. Harry Osborn was a great villain in the film.

Peter and Gwen has the most exceptional chemistry in this film which was so much better than Mary Jane and Peter Parker in the original films. I was sought of surprised that they killed Gwen Stacy off really early as I thought the films would let the character have a much longer story. I have given this film a 7/10 because even though it was better than the first, it still wasn’t as exciting as the original.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

I have been a big fan of marvel since iron man came out and thought that The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble as we in the UK like to call it as we are so random) was the best marvel film out there even though I watched it with subtitles. So when I found out that Captain America was coming out in the cinema, I just knew that I had to watch it.

This film is set after The Avengers where Captain America is now living in Washington D.C, trying to adjust to the modern world and working for S.H.I.E.L.D. When a colleague comes under attack, he has to work with Black Widow to uncover the truth with him finding out that he would need to remember the past now more than ever.

This film was so much better than the first one. There was a lot of action that kept me entertained throughout the whole film. There are a lot of surprises in this film that kept me intrigued. I thought that it was good that after all the secrets and surprises, it never lost the plot of what this film was about which was the winter soldier. I also liked that all the S.H.I.E.L.D agents from The Avengers were in this film as it made the film stand out become strong. I was debating whether I should watch this film in 3D and in the end I didn’t but you know what, it didn’t need to be in 3D as the 2D was still amazing and showed that the film could hold its own. I think that the 3D would have spoiled it as some of the scenes were dark so you would be able to watch it in 3D. I have given this film a 8/10.

P.S. Stay until the credits have finished as there are more surprises like every marvel film that is out there. It might be about a film that is coming out in the future.

Divergent (2014)

After reading the hunger games, I wanted to get back into the habit of reading books so I looked at the New York best seller’s list to look for the top young adults book and came upon this book called Divergent that seemed interesting. I read a sample of the book and knew straight away that I had to read the trilogy. I was also excited to find out a few months later that they were making a film out of this book which I had the chance to go to the European première and see.

This is a film that is set in the dystopian future where Chicago is split into five fractions and at the age of 16, they take a test to tell them which factions they belong to. In the main character Tris’s case, she finds that she is divergent which means she doesn’t fit in one group and Divergents threat the system.

I really enjoyed this adaptation. They really stayed true to the books and I was glad that even though it has been a year since I have read this book, I still got to recognise most of the scene that was in the film. I like the fact that you get to see the characters struggle from being weak in the beginning to become a heroine. I do feel a bit sad that the film came out at the time of the Hunger Games peak that people keep comparing Divergent to Hunger Games but I have to say that these two are completely different. Yes they may be aimed in the future and set in a dystopian world but the storyline and characters are different. In Hunger Games, they fight to the death whereas this film, there are fighting but there is no hunger or forced violence, it is just a peaceful system that is scared of change.

I think that the actors in this film are incredible especially Shailene Woodley as I have been a fan of hers since she did the TV show Secret Life Of The American Teenager but it wasn’t until I saw her in The Descendants that I knew that she would be perfect for an action role. Theo James was also amazing as Four. I have rated this film 7/10 and would love to see the sequel Insurgent.
